Nestled in the heart of Hendersonville, North Carolina, Raven’s Rest is your cozy base for exploring the stunning landscapes and adventures of Western NC. One gem just a 40-minute drive from our rustic cabin is the Johns Rock Loop in Pisgah National Forest, near Brevard. This scenic hike, paired with nearby attractions, makes for a perfect day trip for guests looking to immerse themselves in nature and local charm. Let me share a personal story and guide you through this adventure, complete with tips to make your visit unforgettable.

Getting to Johns Rock Loop from Raven’s Rest

The drive from Raven’s Rest to Johns Rock Loop is a breeze, with only a handful of turns! Hop in your car, take a right onto Kanuga Road, and follow it until it merges into US-64. From there, it’s a straightforward shot to NC-276, leading you into the heart of Pisgah National Forest. The trailhead is located at the Pisgah Forest Fish Hatchery parking lot, a spot that’s easy to find and rich with memories for me.

Years before Raven’s Rest became our beloved rental, my sister-in-law introduced us to tubing in this very same parking lot. We’d drop into the cool, clear waters of the Davidson River, letting the gentle current carry us downstream. Trails along the river made it easy to walk back and do it all again for a perfect summer day! While I can’t recall the tubing rental company (sorry, no shoutout this time), the area’s natural beauty left a lasting impression and makes Johns Rock Loop a must-visit.

Pro Tip: The drive takes about 40 minutes, plan ahead and check out the local fun that can be had for an all day adventure. Pack lunch ahead of time in our fully equipped kitchen!

The Johns Rock Loop Hike

The Johns Rock Loop is a moderate 5.5-mile hike with about 1,300 feet of elevation gain, offering breathtaking views of the Pisgah National Forest. The trail winds through lush forests, past streams, and up to a rocky outcrop with panoramic vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s a fantastic way to experience the rugged beauty of Western NC, just a short drive from Raven’s Rest.

On one memorable trip, I planned to hike Johns Rock with my cousin. I arrived early and waited at a fantastic nearby spot, The Hub and Pisgah Tavern, located just where US-64 meets NC-276. This local gem is a great meeting point before heading into the forest. While waiting, I browsed The Hub’s outdoor gear and checked out the tavern’s selection of local brews and classic favorites - no stress, just good vibes. Unfortunately, Asheville’s afternoon traffic delayed my cousin, and by the time we hit the trail, the evening sun was racing ahead of us. We didn’t make it to the top of Johns Rock that day, but hiking with family, surrounded by towering trees and the sounds of the forest, was worth every step. It’s a reminder that the journey matters as much as the destination.

Hiking Tip: Start early to catch the full view from Johns Rock’s overlook. Bring a camera (unlike me!) to capture the stunning scenery, and pack water and snacks from Raven’s Rest’s kitchen. The trail can get muddy after rain, so sturdy shoes are a must.

Stop by The Hub and Pisgah Tavern

The Hub

Before or after your hike, The Hub and Pisgah Tavern is a must-visit, located right next to the tubing rental area near the trailhead. It’s a laid-back spot to grab a drink, stock up on outdoor gear, or just soak in the mountain atmosphere. Whether you’re meeting friends or taking a breather, it’s a perfect complement to your Pisgah adventure. Their selection of local beers and friendly vibe make it a great place to unwind after exploring the trails.

Pro Tip: If you’re planning a group hike, coordinate to meet at The Hub. It’s a convenient stop with plenty of parking and a welcoming atmosphere.
